About the role:
As the Engineering Manager for the GenAI Modeling team at Modular, you will be responsible for scaling the engineering organization to develop and maintain Modular's cutting-edge models library. Your primary goals will include ensuring the library supports all modern model architectures, providing launch-day support for novel architectures, exploring new research avenues, and fostering the growth of Modular's contributor community. You will collaborate closely with the GenAI and MAX platform teams to drive the necessary features and infrastructure for efficient model development.
LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. You can work in our office in Los Altos, CA or remotely from home. Onboarding for new hires is conducted in-person in our Los Altos, CA office.
What you will do:
- Lead the scoping and development of new GenAI architectures for integration into the MAX stack, ensuring top accuracy from initial research to deployment.
- Lead the team maintaining the MAX library of state-of-the-art models.
- Work with the Modular product team to select and prioritize new architectures.
- Lead and grow the modeling team to the scale demanded by current market needs.
- Drive process and technological advancements to enhance model development efficiency, and establish metrics to continuously measure and track improvements.
- Drive the optimal model development experience by collaborating with stakeholders to influence the development of necessary libraries and tooling.
- Collaborate with the Modular community to facilitate contributions to the models library.
- Influence the Modular practices for collaboration and cross-stack development.
What you bring to the table:
- 3+ years of management experience with a proven track record of building high-performing collaborative teams of 5+ engineers.
- 4+ years of technical experience as a technical lead / contributor in the field of AI and software engineering.
- In-depth understanding of deep learning, especially LLMs.
- Adept at navigating ambiguity and ability to exercise sound judgment to identify appropriate solutions and tools, while avoiding unnecessary complexity.
- Proficiency in Python programming languages, plus familiarity with frameworks such as MAX, Pytorch, or vLLM.

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $234,000.00 - $286,000.00 USD.
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in Canada, regardless of the province, is $229,000.00 - $280,000.00 CAD.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
